Research into similar products - Institutional Research

In preparation for our Main Task we have researched into institutions in the film and media industry. We have found film distributors, such as '20th Century Fox', and 'New Line Cinema'. Film distributors are in charge of marketing a film, perhaps setting the date in which it is going to be released, where it will be released etc. They make the decision on whether the film will be released in cinema at all, or whether it will just be released on DVD or if the DVD will be released before the film is released in a cinema. A film distributor may also be in charge of advertising the film before it's release date. So they will advertise the film in magazines, newspapers and also on billboards and on the television. Often a lot of money is spent on advertisement.

One of the most known Distributors is '20th Century Fox'. They distribute many brilliant films such as 'Avatar', 'Star Wars' and one of our influential films 'Titanic'. They are a very successful film company and that is clear from the statistics of their films they have distributed. For Avatar, the budget was estimated around $237 million and the film grossed $760,505,847 which is a massive profit. Also for Titanic the budget was $200 million and the film grossed $658,672,302, which again is a massive profit, making 20th Century Fox a very successful Film Distributor.

For our Film opening 'The Ripple Effect', we wanted to use a film distributor that has distributed films similar to our own. My most influential film was 'The Notebook', and New Line Cinema was the distributor for that film, so we wanted to use them to distribute our film. New Line Cinema is a very big film company and have distributed brilliant films such as 'Lord of the Rings', 'Sex and The City' and 'I am Sam'. Because New Line Cinema have been successful in distributing many brilliant films we decided that they would be a great choice to distribute 'The Ripple Effect'. The main reason for choosing New Line Cinema is because of 'The Notebook' and the film had a massive impact on our choice for the main task.

Group Roles

Barney Flood - I was the author for this post and I typed all of the information up. I researched into specific film distributors and found out some facts that back up their success in the film and media industry. I discussed with Elijah and Zak about how key film distributors are and we compared a few film distributors - ultimately coming to the decision agreeing to use New Line Cinema as our film distributor. I also posted our research here.

Zak Jakubowski- My group role for this task was to shadow Barney while he was typing all of this up and to help him in anyway I could; discuss ideas, help with wording, generally come to his aid. I also researched myself so I had the knowledge to contribute and as well as helping discussing what to type I also took a lot of the information and websites in and remembered it all for my own benefit.

Elijah Potter - My group role was to listen to Barney as he discussed with me and Zak, from there I went on to various websites dedicated to films and how films of our genre have progressed over the years, one of the most significant films being 'Titanic' being an all time great. I researched and took information from these websites in.
