Planning - Animatic Storyboard

Group Roles

Barney Flood - My role for this Animatic Storyboard for 'The Ripple Effect' was to take half of the pictures along with Elijah taking the other half. As well as this I directed where characters needed to be for each image and what they needed to do. Once all the images were taken, I then uploaded them to my laptop and transferred all of the files needed to my memory stick so that the files could be brought into school and the editing of our storyboard could begin. Once I brought in the files I then started to edit the storyboard. Initially we all began discussing as I began to edit, how it was going to be done and we all contributed to how it would be edited. My role was to then edit the entire storyboard which included bringing in the music, editing the images specifically and incorporating the titles into the sequence. Once the Storyboard was completed I then exported the file onto my memory stick and after that I uploaded the video to YouTube. Once all of this was complete I then created this post for our blog and shared our video above, so that it is now in this post on our blog.

Zak Jakubowski - The role i played for this task in the Animatic story board for 'Ripple effect' was to star in each image as i am an actor in the film 'Tyler'. i had give the impression i was running in each scene like i would be in the film along with Lucy Gladdish 'Elizabeth'. with help from Barney as the director i knew what i had to do in each scene and where to go for the next. i also helped discuss a few camera shots with Barney sharing views on what would make the film better and from that and Elijah's role played well as a camera man, the Animatic came together nicely in the end and now this is the post on the blog.

Elijah Potter - My role for this Animatic Storyboard was the be the cameraman, this was an important job as I had to get various shots that would tell the story well. I used creative angles and suggested various ideas. With the help of Barney Flood, we were able to obtain various shots that could be used effectively.

Planning - Shot List

Group Roles

Zachary Jakubowski - for this task I typed up everything, I had to use the camera shots for the animatic as a guideline as to which shots were taken when because not every scene was taken in the order. I also had to work out which shots were where and if they were exterior or interior, if the camera was handheld or with a tripod. also I had to work out which scenes had conversation which was easy because there are only a few. Elijah and Barney helped me with the shot description as they were there and could help me remember what the shot consisted of.

Barney Flood - For this task I gave Zak the resource of the animatic and the film so that he could record each shot and the list that they come in. Other than that, this post was mainly completed by Zak.

Elijah Potter - I provided Zak assistance for various shots, reminding him of certain shots and providing little help for the descriptions. Overall, Zak had the biggest influence for this task.

Planning - Location Shots

Planning - Location Shots

This is Riverside, which is located in Rainham. We chose this location because it ties in with our romantic theme that we are striving to achieve. The landscape is open and bonds well with nature, this can be used to contrast the two main character's feelings, who are trying to find paradise within their love lives.

This particular location is set near Riverside in the nature reserve on Berengrave Lane. The bench is isolated, looking over the scene that shows the whole landscape. This effectively portrays the relationship that these characters share, who are both seeking freedom to love.

This location is set near Riverside in the nature reserve on Berengrave Lane. This is in the point of view of the bench, showing the two antagonists, being Barney (Left) and his brother Seb (Right). The light is significant in this picture, as it seems darker than the others. This can be used to portray the fact that these characters pose a threat to the relationship that is trying to develop. The trees are symbolic, as well with the trees, with the sky representing the wealthy girl and their relationship, and the trees representing the country boy, who is grounded to the limits of his society, ultimately making their relationship seem inevitable.

Group Roles

Elijah Potter - My group role was to look at each individual picture and analyse them throughout, considering my interpretations and what may be symbolic and iconic. Thinking about why certain pictures were taken in certain places and why some effects may have put into them. Although i wasn't able to take the first couple of pictures, I was able to take an efficient picture of the antagonists and note why the location chosen was significant to them.

Barney Flood - For this task my role was to take the first two images of the landscape with Lucy and Zak in one of them. I also helped Elijah along with Zak in analysing the images and why they are effective for our film. I then uploaded the images onto my laptop at home - I saved the images onto my memory stick and I then saved the images to our groups folder on our school computer so Elijah could access them and upload them here to the blog.

Zachary Jakubowski - My group role for this task was to help Elijah describe the each picture for the location shots along with Barney and just basically observe Elijah while he typed this task up. I also was in some images as I am the actor in the film. My final contribution to this task was to help take the actual pictures, I took some of them and also helped when positioning the camera for other pictures

Planning - Pitch Video

Group Roles

Elijah PotterI was responsible for uploading the video to the blog in this post.

Barney Flood - I saved the video file to my memory stick from the camera which took the video. Then I saved onto the computer for Elijah to do his job in uploading it.

Zak Jakubowski - my role for this task was to navigate through the pitch while Elijah and Barney discuss the ideas for  the film to the class, I also contributed to creating the pitch along with the Barney and Elijah and helped answered questions about our pitch.

Planning - Music

For our main task we are creating the opening to our film called 'The Ripple Effect'. Due to our film being a Romantic Drama Film, our music we want to use will be very key in order for our end product to be good and effective. We had a few choices that we may have used - one being "High Hopes" by Kodaline, however the one song we wanted to use for our film was a song called "King and Lionheart" by Of Monsters and Men. The song and the lyrics enhance the idea of two people wanting to be together however there are people wanting them to be separated. This links with our plot to our film perfectly and that is why I felt we needed this piece of music.

I contacted Republic Records - The Record Label who own the copyright to the song. I e-mailed them, messaged their Facebook page and tweeted to them on twitter trying to get permission to use the original song. Sadly they didn't reply so I found a cover of the song which will still be effective for our film. I messaged the owner of the version on YouTube and he gave me permission to be able to use his song for our Main Task. So our music is a cover of King and Lionheart by joshbwild.

Group Roles

Barney Flood - For music, my role was initially to discuss it with the rest of the group. I came up with the idea of using "King and Lionheart" and the others agreed. I made all of the research into finding copyright owners for the song we wanted. I also researched the copyright law to confirm what we needed in order to be able to use a song made by someone else. I then made all of the communication in getting permission for the music from both Of Monsters and Men as well as joshbwild. After this I typed up this post and posted it here.

Elijah Potter - Basically, I contributed in the decision making that helped us come to conclusion that "King and Lionheart" will be the song that we will be using. It was Barney's initial idea to choose this song, and I felt that it was a great choice.

Zachary Jakubowski- For this task my role was to help decide as a group what song best suites the genre and script of our story, we all came to a conclusion that "King and Lionheart" would be that song. It was Barneys initial idea to choose this song and me and Elijah agreed with his decision.

Research into similar products - Institutional Research

In preparation for our Main Task we have researched into institutions in the film and media industry. We have found film distributors, such as '20th Century Fox', and 'New Line Cinema'. Film distributors are in charge of marketing a film, perhaps setting the date in which it is going to be released, where it will be released etc. They make the decision on whether the film will be released in cinema at all, or whether it will just be released on DVD or if the DVD will be released before the film is released in a cinema. A film distributor may also be in charge of advertising the film before it's release date. So they will advertise the film in magazines, newspapers and also on billboards and on the television. Often a lot of money is spent on advertisement.

One of the most known Distributors is '20th Century Fox'. They distribute many brilliant films such as 'Avatar', 'Star Wars' and one of our influential films 'Titanic'. They are a very successful film company and that is clear from the statistics of their films they have distributed. For Avatar, the budget was estimated around $237 million and the film grossed $760,505,847 which is a massive profit. Also for Titanic the budget was $200 million and the film grossed $658,672,302, which again is a massive profit, making 20th Century Fox a very successful Film Distributor.

For our Film opening 'The Ripple Effect', we wanted to use a film distributor that has distributed films similar to our own. My most influential film was 'The Notebook', and New Line Cinema was the distributor for that film, so we wanted to use them to distribute our film. New Line Cinema is a very big film company and have distributed brilliant films such as 'Lord of the Rings', 'Sex and The City' and 'I am Sam'. Because New Line Cinema have been successful in distributing many brilliant films we decided that they would be a great choice to distribute 'The Ripple Effect'. The main reason for choosing New Line Cinema is because of 'The Notebook' and the film had a massive impact on our choice for the main task.

Group Roles

Barney Flood - I was the author for this post and I typed all of the information up. I researched into specific film distributors and found out some facts that back up their success in the film and media industry. I discussed with Elijah and Zak about how key film distributors are and we compared a few film distributors - ultimately coming to the decision agreeing to use New Line Cinema as our film distributor. I also posted our research here.

Zak Jakubowski- My group role for this task was to shadow Barney while he was typing all of this up and to help him in anyway I could; discuss ideas, help with wording, generally come to his aid. I also researched myself so I had the knowledge to contribute and as well as helping discussing what to type I also took a lot of the information and websites in and remembered it all for my own benefit.

Elijah Potter - My group role was to listen to Barney as he discussed with me and Zak, from there I went on to various websites dedicated to films and how films of our genre have progressed over the years, one of the most significant films being 'Titanic' being an all time great. I researched and took information from these websites in.

Planning - Call Sheet

Group Roles

Zachary Jakubowski - My group role for this task was to type up all of the information in this table. This required me to interpret if a shot was a medium long shot or establishing shot, which scenes were shot in what order, and the rest of the information was pretty straight forward with the dates, times and who was in what scene.

Barney Flood - For the call sheet I let Zak know on some of the camera angles we need for our film as well as confirming I will be able to make the times which we will need to be available to film our Main Task

Elijah Potter - I did not contribute to this task.

Planning - Risk Assessment

Zachary Jakubowski - My group role for this task was to type up everything and word it properly, I also thought up every risk and precaution which eliminates the hazard this is designed to warn everyone involved in each risk to be aware of what cold go wrong and proceed with caution at all times so that the hazard wont happen, then I published the post.

Elijah Potter - Thanks to Zak and his Analysis of the location that we will be filming and noting all the risks that could be a possible problem, I now know that we must take particular care when it comes to shooting the film. It is also vital for me to take notice of the others around me when filming, as they are also at risk. Thanks to this, each of us are now aware of the upcoming risks.

Barney Flood - Zak let me know the risks that I may have when we are filming due to the location and weather we may have. I now know that when we are ready to film, that we can inform everybody involved of the risks we may have whilst filming.

Planning - Equpiment List

Zachary Jakubowski - My group role for this task was to type up all of the information regarding equipment. I also thought up every piece of equipment and why we needed to use it for our film and gave reasons why we needed it.

Elijah Potter - I provided the group with high quality earphones. They're beats, which are designed to be used in music studios to produce music. These headphones were great as we were able to hear all the sounds that we needed to hear.

Barney Flood - I provided some of the equipment we needed. I let Zak know that I had the camera we needed to take the pictures and videos with and also that I had a laptop and memory stick to back up our data.

Zak Jakubowski - my group role for this task was to over look what tasks I would allocate for myself and if I had completed them yet. I done this to show myself what I had left to do and what I should start working on so I can contribute to the blog.

Barney Flood - For this action plan we have distributed the tasks so that we each can individual complete different ones so that we should be able to get them done quite promptly. My role was to take responsibility for the Pitch, Institutional research, Animatic storyboard, Shot list, Shot schedule, Script and Music. When I complete one of the posts I will edit this action plan confirming that I have completed that post so we know as a group what ones we have left to do.

Theme/Setting

·         Wood/outdoors

Characters

Plot

·       ‘Coming’ Zak’s idea. A man who has recently lost both his wife and daughter, has become mentally scarred and damaged due to the intense hole that has been created from his loss. He goes to their graves and pays his respects, which is when he meets the baddies who have committed the crime. Enraged, the Man then goes into his car, gripping onto the steering wheel, saying the title ‘coming’.

'Ripple Effect' Barney's idea. A rich man’s daughter falls in love with a country boy who her father despises. They secretly meet up for a while without her father knowing but after a while he catches what she has been going out of the house for so often. He gets some of his men together to go out and find where the boy lives and burn his house down with him inside, so that his daughter will have to move on and forget about the boy. For our opening we will be showing the beginning of the film which involves a scene of the couple running through the riverside, away from her dad’s men. Chronologically this is not the beginning of the story as after the opening scenes there will be a title stating “six months earlier” with the beginning of the romantic story beginning there with the boy and the girl not knowing each other at the start. The effect of showing the couple together at the beginning of the film shows their relationship at that moment in time, so that they can contrast that to their relationship and how it grows when they first meet and get closer  rich man’s daughter falls in love with a country boy who her father despises. Planning - Action Plan for Pitch

When we delivered our pitches to the class we got some feedback which we could attend to, in order to make our idea on the Main Task better. Initially we had two idea's for our Main Task, therefore we had 2 pitches that we presented to the class. Here are some of the things we have found improvements for from our Pitch we delivered to the class:

  • We had two ideas for our Main Task. One delivered by Barney (Ripple Effect) and one delivered by Zak (Coming). From what the class told us, we decided that Ripple effect would be the better idea to take forward and focus on for the rest of our Main Task.
  • When we initially delivered the Pitch for Ripple effect, we still hadn't decided on a name for the film we were producing the opening for. We were torn between two ideas: Lionheart (Barney) or Ripple Effect (Elijah). From the feedback we got from the class we decided on the title Ripple Effect as that was the idea everyone preferred.
  • We want to use the song "King and Lionheart" by Of Monsters and Men. If we will be able to use this song we need to get permission from the record company 'Republic Records'. It will be hard to get a response from the company but we are trying our best to get permission. If we do not get permission we have a back up plan for copyright free music which we can use in our Main Task instead.
  • We need to ensure that we incorporate titles into our Main Task. To incorporate titles throughout our opening of the film the need to suit our genre and flow smoothly throughout. To fulfill effective titles we will try to make the font soft and clear to suit the romantic genre. As well as this they need to enter the film smoothly and exit smoothly as well.

We will make sure to attend these issues and improve them. Hopefully they will be achieved and shown when we create our opening to Ripple Effect.

    Group Roles

Zak Jakubowski - This pitch was my vision so I typed all of apart from the music, target audience and Mise en scene. I also delivered all of the pitch to the class; explaining why I used certain characters, camera angles, location etc. Yet I still had question arise at the end which is good because even one question from the audience could highlight a hole in the storyline and make the opening a lot better. I answered these questions with Barney and Elijah.

Elijah Potter -  I did the target audience, researching on similar topics to gain the ideal target audience. I also made ideas for particular mise en scene, including costume ideas and props. I also made a suggest for music.

Barney Flood - For this pitch, I didn't present any of the ideas to the class, but I helped answer some questions the class had at the end.

Group Roles

Barney Flood - My role for the pitch was to deliver the pitch to the class. I tried to explain the plot we had for our film and explain what we intend to do for our opening scene for our main task. Highlighting key camera angles + techniques I believe that the pitch went quite well and I think that I explained most of what was needed to be said. I then answered questions that our class asked us along with Elijah and Zak.

Elijah Potter - I presented my ideal title for Barney's pitch. Allowing Barney to explain the pitch and express his plans, before I said what i felt was a necessary title for the main task.

Zak Jakubowski - My role for this pitch was to operate the mouse and scroll down along with Barney and Elijah reading out different parts of the pitch. I also played a part answering questions from the class with Elijah and Barney.

Peer Assessment - Action Plan

In our media lesson today, as a class, we all looked at each group's blog. Each group presented their blog to the class and explained what they have included in their blog. When it was our turn to present our blog to the class we got some feedback from Mr Lewis and the rest of the class which we can now attend to:

  • At the time we were missing our preliminary film feedback video, which is a key part to our blog and our preliminary progress. We have already put that video up and that was the last post that was on our checklist. Now we have every post we need on our blog, however improvements and adjustments still need to be made in order for us to achieve a better result.
  • We had two titles which were worded slightly wrong, and there was a possibility that this could mislead an examiner and ultimately could lower our grade for our preliminary. We now know to attend these issues and adjust the titles to fit the post accurately.
  • We do not only need to change some titles, but we still have not correctly labelled every single post which also could mean that we may lose marks for our preliminary.
  • The last thing which we found from our peer assessment in lesson was to state roles for each and every post completed. This is key for our blog as if we do not include them, then one of us may get credit for things we did not do and one may unfortunately not be credited for something which they did well. These corrections will be made promptly and we will leave a message within this post confirming the corrections made.

Friday, 25 October 2013

We decided as a group to split up the 3 corrections and we each completed them Thursday evening, and all the corrections have now been made to our blog.

Group Roles

Zak Jakubowski - In the lesson when we presented our blog to the class my role was to operate the mouse and navigate through the blog while Barney explained what we had accomplished so far. We also observed our positives and negatives in the blog and found 4 faults. my job in the group was to change the titles to the correct wording and explain my group role for each task.

Elijah Potter - Although i wasn't able to make it into lesson, due to being ill, Barney and Zak filled me in about what had happened during lesson, what was done, and what was learnt. Therefore my task was to catch up on things that i had missed, such as including all the roles that i've done throughout the preliminary task.

Barney Flood - In the lesson when we presented our blog, I was standing at the front of the class and I pointed out each post we made and where we had already completed most of the criteria for our blog. When we had the corrections that needed to be made to the blog I completed the upload of the Preliminary film feedback video. Lastly I have stated my group roles for each post in which the group roles are needed to be shown.

Preliminary Film - Class Feedback

Group Roles

Barney Flood - For this video feedback of our class, I was recording it on the camera and answering some of the questions that the class had about our Preliminary film. I tried to explain some of the techniques we used as well as pointing out specific key parts of our film for example the match-on-action that we used. After filming the feedback I then converted the file size for it to fit into this post for our blog.

Zak Jakubowski - In this video where we recorded our feedback from the class regarding our preliminary film, my role was to answer some questions about the preliminary film along with Barney and Elijah, we would explain which techniques, various camera shots etc. we used. at one point in the film I even gave some positive criticism of my own towards our video near the end.

Elijah Potter - In this video where we recorded the feedback given from our class about our preliminary film, my task was to answer some questions to make the audience understand what was happening and get a little deeper into the film. I also explained where some of the techniques were used.

Barney Flood - Preliminary task - Self Assessment

Does your film use continuity editing so that the sequence of events are clear and easily understood by the viewer?
Yes, I am pleased with the outcome of the film and the way I edited the clips - with credit to some help from Zak. I believe that it is smooth and effective for the genre of the film.

Have you followed the directions in the brief?
We followed the majority of the brief however we did change some bits in order to fit the 180-degree rule and the shot/reverse shot. The things in which we changed and added in were better idea’s, in my opinion, which helped our preliminary reach a better standard.

Have you used match-on-action?
We have used match-on-action at the moment when Elijah opens the door and there is a slow, creaky close up on his hand as he opens it.

Can you explain what a match-on-action involves?
Match-on-action involves an action from an actor in one scene, which is then mirrored in the next seen and it can change the atmosphere of a film. For example in our film, the match-on-action is used as Elijah opens the door. It goes from a normal and casual mood with Elijah being relaxed as he is walking up to the door, to a creepier environment when he enters back into the room to see the woman.

Have you used shot/reverse shot?
Yes we have included shot/reverse briefly when Elijah first meets the woman in the classroom. They exchange quick eye-contact before Elijah makes a break for it and tries to escape her.

Can you explain what shot/reverse shot involves?
Shot reverse shot involves two camera angles, usually involving two actors for either angle. The initial shot is of one actor’s perspective looking at the other person, and then the reverse shot is from the other actor’s perspective looking back at the initial actor. This is shown in our Preliminary when our two characters first meet.

Did you observe the 180-degree rule?
We did not perform a 180-degree rule in our Preliminary; however we did not break the 180-degree rule.

Can you explain the 180-degree rule?
The 180-degree rule is when two characters are in a scene, perhaps one being on the left of the scene and one on the right side. The camera angle will break the 180-degree rule if the people in the scene were seen to swap positions and appear in a different place in the film. For example Elijah was always seen standing by the door when he first see’s the woman which is observing the 180-degree rule.

What role did you play in the making of the preliminary task?
In the making of the Preliminary task, I had the job of being the camera man. I shot all of the clips in the film and then uploaded them to Adobe Premier Pro. As well as filming the scenes, I converted them into files suited for editing and I then edited all of the film. Zak did help me in making decisions for some of the editing and we both together decided what worked well in the film.

How would you assess your contribution to the group?
I thing I contributed a lot to the group as I believe that the editing was very successful and the video footage was also quite good. I am thankful to have had Zak helping me with the editing and I believe he also made a big contribution to our group not only with his part in editing, but his directing when we were shooting the clips also. The final contribution to the group was Elijah and he helped make our Preliminary successful with his acting skills and brainstorming in coming up with key idea’s for the film. All in all, I am very pleased to be part of the team and enjoyed working on this Preliminary film.

What have you learned from the process of making your preliminary film?
In the process of creating our Preliminary film I have learned that organisation and planning will enable us to have a better end product in the future. I have a lot of confidence in our group and am looking forward to working on the main task together with the boys soon.

Preliminary task Evaluation

Does your film use continuity editing so that the sequence of events are clear and easily understood by the viewer? Yes, my group did a great job with the editing as we did not have any issues with it, with credit to Barney Flood, the editing techniques we used flowed smoothly and effectively, avoiding confusion and keeping the events clear and easy to understand. · Have you followed the directions in the brief? (A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character. An exchange of dialogue occurs.) We didn't follow the directions in the brief, in fact, we changed it around keeping in mind that we had to use match-on-action, shot reverse shot and also keep in mind about the 180 degree rule. · Have you used match-on-action? Yes, we used the match-on-action on the light switch, when the main character turns the light on. We also did it with the opening of the door. .Can you explain what a match-on action involves? It is when one shot takes place, which then cuts to a different shot, which shows the same action as the first shot, portraying a sense of continuity · Have you used shot/reverse shot? We used shot/reverse shot when The Woman appears on the chair and spins around, which goes from the main character to The Woman back to the main character again. · Can you explain what shot/reverse shot involves? Its when a character looks at someone or something, then the shot changes to the point of view of the object or the person that is being looked at, back towards the observer again. Did you observe the 180-degree rule? We did not use the 180-degree rule simply because we did not need it as there was no conversation used. · Can you explain the 180-degree rule? It is when two people are in a shot at a table for example, and the camera can only be shot from one side, to prevent people from becoming confused. If you imagine a circle, and you record from the other side (going over 180 degrees) the people within the scene will seem to be at the opposite side as they did originally, hence why it is called the 180 degree rule. · What role did you play in the making of the preliminary task? (e.g. filming, acting, editing, equipment organisation etc.) I was the actor. · How would you assess your contribution to the group? I think that i did a good job at contributing to the task with my partners, being flexible enough to adjust to the different shot types and angles, as well as being the camera model for the provided pictures. I performed well with the acting and flowed well with the group, keeping our potential as high as it can be. Although i did make slight mistakes whilst recording, i can only learn from them and improve as much as i can in order to achieve even more than i have been able to achieve now. · What have you learned from the process of making your preliminary film? I have learned how vital planning is, making a personal target of mine to become more organised.
